1) Introduction

Welcome to Ge 310: Literary Forms and Composition!
The main goal of this class is to help you become more familiar with different kinds
of German literary texts. You will also have ample opportunity to improve your
reading and listening skills as well as your ability to express your ideas on these
texts in written German.

2) Objectives

After this class you will:
*have a better overview of the different forms of German literary expression.
*feel more confident about your ability to read, write and speak in German.
*have become acquainted with some of the major themes and motifs of German
fiction.
*be more knowledgeable about the historical background of german literary forms. .

3) Text

Please purchase Im Spiegel der Literatur from the Notre Dame bookstore.
At this point in your study of the German language it would probably make sense -
if you have not already done so - to consider purchasing a good German dictionary.

4) Requirements

*The first and most basic requirement is that you come to class having carefully
read the material that is to be discussed that day.
*You should prepared to talk about what you have read, either in the form of
questions about the text or comments and opinions. Your questions will range from
 simple ones having to do with content to other more complex inquiries concerning
 literary aspects or the cultural context of the story. Class participation will be an
important part of your grade.
*You will write 6 2-3 page papers (500-600 words) in German for the class on topics
that I will assign about the stories you have read. Because the focus of this class
is on composition, you will be asked to edit (revise) each essay you hand in. Grades
will be given for both the draft and the rewrite and both will be used to determine
the final grade. Compositions and rewrites are always due on the Monday of the
week for which they have been assigned. Rewrites will not be accepted if the
first draft is turned in after the due date. Rewrites will not be accepted late.
*Your grade for the course will be based on the following components:
* Attendance, class participation			          40%
* Essays							40%
* Final Examination						20%

5) Attendance Policy:

I will interpret any unexcused absences on your part as an indication that you did
not complete the assigned reading and therefore did not fulfill the first basic
requirement of the course. So even one unexcused absence will affect your
overall grade for attendance and class participation.
