This was an independent study offered to students who needed an extra course and had expressed an interest in a German film course. It was my first foray into teaching a film course and thus was perhaps more experimental and informal than more traditional film courses. The students wrote journals about the films and we always had lively and interesting discussions about the technical aspects of film making (in German). I think it was an enjoyable educational experience for all.
A main theme that emerged was that of gender: most, if not all of our movies could be interpreted as sophisticated reflections on the relationship between gender-role expectations and society.
