The Albion Journey

As a senior in high school all I wanted to do was attend University of Michigan.  There was a great city, successful football team, and a huge population of students to meet.  Unexpectedly, a friend's mom at the Sadie Hawkins dance recommended that I apply to Albion College.  Not taking it very seriously, I applied.  I was not thinking ahead or taking it into consideration in the slightest bit and after getting admitted I avoided visiting at all costs so that it would not interfere with my plans of going to U of M.  My parents insisted that we visit, so we did and they had a decision in mind much different than my own.  Thinking that they knew more than I about choosing a college, they made me come to Albion.  I came on an overnight visit and still held on tight to my plans of transferring after first semester.

Then, I attended SOAR (orientation here at Albion).  I had an amazing SOAR student leader who made the two days fun and helped me make connections with other first years.  In the group I met an amazing woman, Lily Saliba, who was very intelligent, fun, and excited about coming to college.  We ended up being roommates and she helped me meet so many more people and establish a group of great friends.

I guess it's all history from there because I am still at Albion and could not be prouder and more involved.  Hopefully by tour guiding and mentoring first year students I have shared my experience in such a way that they can overcome their own stubbornness and find all the opportunities Albion has to offer them.

By the way, there was the whole academic part too :)  Classes were challenging and enjoyable ... the first time there was ever that combination.  I eventually got over the idea that visiting professors during office hours was brown-nosing and started getting all the help I needed to be even more successful.  Great relationships flourished with them as it did my friends and Dr. Green offered me a research job funded by F.U.R.S.C.A and Lancy/N.C.U.R.  I could not turn down such a good paying and experiential job so I stayed in Albion after my first year.  Hard to believe from someone who was transferring before she ever started a class.

The first Alpha Chi Omega formal for the girls with long and skinny arms or "spaghetts" as we like to say.
