Tell Me the Story!

I created this assignment to try to get my students to understand how imagery and emotions fit into all the music they play.  This is just a very short credit/no credit introductory assignment that I would do for various pieces we will explore during the school year.  I plan to have these papers develop into a critical analysis of the piece.

What’s the story?

Hey BAND!

We rehearse everyday to prepare for a performance.  People known as audiences (aka: your parents, friends, and family) come to listen and watch you perform.  While they listen many emotions are provoked through the melodies, harmonies, and chords that you play.  Some people develop pictures or stories in their mind.  In fact, some composers will write a piece based on a specific event and have a narrator describe everything as the music is being performed.

This assignment will allow you to get creative!  I would like you to tell me the story or describe the picture you see when you rehearse/perform this piece.  Feel free to use measure numbers or specify instrumental sections with melodies to define the exact moment in the music you are relating to when big events or emotional changes happen.  The minimum length for this project is one page typed (or two pages front and back if hand writing), but there is no maximum length.  You may type or handwrite the assignment please see the guidelines below for each technique.  The stories are due Monday, April 16th during class. I will do my best to have them turned back to you no later than April 23rd. J

The purpose of this assignment is to allow both you and I to make a direct connection with the piece.  It will help all of us create good music for a concert if we all think about the music in this way.  REALLY good stories or picture descriptions may be shared with the band if you are comfortable with it.  I will not tell the band your name.
