Philosophy of Music Education

Music programs develop around the world from numerous teachers with many different points of view. The most successful teachers begin their career with a plan, purpose, and goal for what skills and abilities their students will have acquired at the end of their academic careers.  My philosophy of music education is to teach my students the means of self - expression, identification, and the importance and significance of music education.

Self - expression is an essential component to music.  After students learn to read notation and understand the aspects of producing good tones on their instrument, they will be taught terms of musical expression.  In the beginning, they will learn such things like dynamics, and style changes.  By the time they end high school, they will be able to not only play these musical expressions, but also interpret them in a personal manner. They will be creating a story through music.  My students will leave the classroom comfortable with their identity and ability to express emotions through their music.

My students will learn to identify with the music we perform in a variety of ways.  One way is to have my students research the composer; finding out important dates, events, and pieces he/she wrote in their lives and why they wrote them.  They will learn the motive behind the music, come to the same ideals of the composer, and portray those ideas to the audience during performance.

As a future music director/teacher, I believe music education should be a mandatory requirement for all students.  Music teaches a universal language about many citizen’s in the world.  More importantly, statistics prove people who were/are involved in band have higher grades and test scores, allowing them to achieve higher standards in life.  Through my philosophy, students will be taught skills they can apply to the world outside of music.  Students will achieve a personal identification, and feel comfortable being who they are in public.  In turn, this will allow them to be comfortable speaking to people, and sharing ideas with the public.  They will learn to do scholarly research, which will help them prove a point in an argument, and/or be involved in worthwhile productive projects.

My philosophy of music education requires an individual’s understanding of self – expression, identification with the music, and an allowance for music to be applied in their future life.  Teaching a music program is not a job; it is coaching a team.  My students will be working together towards the common goal of identifying and expressing the means of a composer through the music on their instrument.  They will be encouraged to take their skills learned in band, and apply them to their world outside of the band room.
